You need money to cover operating costs as well as carry out activities and services like lobbying, advocacy, education and research. Your board is responsible for ensuring that the money is in the budget. That money can come from a variety of sources:
- Membership Dues
- Fees charged for training programs, webinars, etc.
- Grants from government of foundations for research
- Conferences
- Donations from members or individual donors
- Special events like a gala dinner or walkathon
Some key items you should have in place:
- An Annual budget that specifies how much money is needed
- A written fundraising plan that contains
- A dollar goal
- The source of the money
- What activities you need to do to raise the money (such as donation drives, fees for training courses, contract work for governmental agencies, grants from charitable foundations, etc.)
- Who will do the work
- Develop an event/conference guide book with tasks and contacts listed with a timeline for when these things need to be accomplished prior to the event.
- Regular board review of progress in meeting fundraising goals
